In the long history of reality shows, this one, suggestively called 'There's Something About Miriam', was at the time it aired in the UK (in 2004) the only television program to ever take the label 'the cruelest reality show idea yet' and to generate such controversy and suing from both sides (meaning, cast and producers likewise). Because, you see, although the hottie proposed for the big prize was, well, extremely hot, there really was something about Miriam.
The entire concept of the show seemed, initially, strikingly similar to any dating show out there: there were five good-looking men competing to earn the affection of a gorgeous 21-year-old model, Miriam, and the big prize, consisting of £10,000 and the most luxurious vacation on a yacht. But, as the tagline implied, Miriam had a very huge secret that would blow the contestants and the public away, something of so major importance that she only chose to reveal it in the last episode of the show, after she had already picked her dream man.
After telling Tom Rooke that he was the winner of the show (and big prize and date), Miriam goes on to reveal her big secret and it goes something like this: 'I tried to be honest with all of you, not just some of you. Yes, I am from Mexico, I am a model, and I'm 21. But Tom, I really love spending time with you and kissing you. You see, I love men, and I love being a woman. But... shh, quiet everybody, please, quiet. But you see, Tom... I am not a woman. I was born as a man.' Talk about a biiig secret! Obviously, all the guys went into instant shock... and then fits of laughter.
Initially, Tom agreed to continue seeing Miriam, and therefore cash in the prize, but he later changed his mind and joined his former rivals in the suit they filed against producers for sexual assault (apparently, there was a lot of touching and fondling done while the show lasted), emotional scarring, defamation and breach of contract. After that, the show was never aired again in the UK.
But it only gets better! In their desperate search for new audiences and higher ratings, the good guys at Fox Reality cable channel have decided that the show will actually catch on with the American public and, thus, they already announced a premiere date - the 31st of October, 2007. Naturally, they will stick by the recipe perfected by their British mates, namely, of keeping the six straight guys completely in the dark concerning Miriam's sex and allowing them to be as free to show their attraction towards her as they like.
All in all, it's going to be fun! Or not! Anyway, don't take my word for it and just watch the clip below ('The Reveal' from the UK version) to see what you're to expect. These being said, Miriam is one hot... mamacito?, papacito? She's just hot!
