Wacom has released a tablet device, only instead of a media slate it created a pad that people may use for drawing, scribbling or anything else that would normally require pen and paper.

The Intuos5, as the new product is called, comes in three sizes and not only supports stylus input, but can also keep track of sixteen touch points at once.

What's more, it recognizes standard Windows and Mac touch commands and gestures.

Not only that, but users can create their own gestures as long as the application they use supports it.

"The multi-touch interface in the Intuos5 is Wacom's most elegant implementation of gesture support to date," says Don Varga, professional products brand director for Wacom Technology Services Corporation.

"Switching from pen to touch or to gesture based navigation is a liberating experience, allowing one to reduce repetitive motion and interact more naturally with the computer."

For ease of use, Wacom installed some customizable ExpressKeys on the left side of the tablets, six on the small size and eight on the medium and large pads.

These keys can store common shortcuts and modifiers, reducing the need to use the keyboard of whatever PC the Intuos5 is hooked up to. The Express View Heads-Up Display (HUD) feature helps with displaying the current settings, but is invisible most of the time.

"Express View modernizes the user interface and is instrumental in helping improve workflow and boost productivity," says Varga. "It allows users to remain focused on their work and concentrate on the creative process while providing all the benefits of a faster workflow."

Speaking of PC connections, owners can use USB or, provided they get the Wireless Accessory Kit (sold separately), RF wireless.

Finally, the Grip Pen registers 2048 levels of pen pressure and up to 60 degrees of pen tilt, emulating pencils, markers and even paint brushes.

Sales are already underway, in three sizes: Intuos5 touch Small has a price of $229.95 / 172.47 Euro, Medium ships for $349.95 / 262.58 Euro and Large has a tag of $469.95 / 352.49 Euro.
