A bunker dating back to World War II is currently undergoing a major transformation. Long story short, the bunker is set to be turned into a renewable energy power plant.

This WW II relic is located in Hamburg, and the people working on this green-oriented project are confident that its transformation will be complete by 2015 at the latest.

During WW II, the bunker helped shield countless people against aerial attacks. Once turned into a renewable energy power plant, it will help improve on Hamburg's ecological footprint. Inhabitat informs us that the bunker is expected to meet the heating demands of 3,000 households. Furthermore, the facility is set to generate sufficient energy so as to keep 1,000 homes up and running.

The same source informs us that work on turning this bunker into a power plant debuted last year. Since then, workers have succeeded in restoring the facility's structural integrity and in installing a solar array.

This solar array is attached to both the bunker's roof and its exterior, thus ensuring that the facility makes the most of whatever sunlight comes its way.

By the looks of it, a wood-burning plant is to also be accommodated within the walls of this bunker, and a biomethane-fired combined heat and power plant will also make its way into the design.

“The former flak bunker in Wilhelmsburg is intended to become a symbol for the climate protection concept ‘Renewable Wilhelmsburg,’” reads the official website for this project.

“The structure, which has not been used since WWII, will now be equipped with a biomass combined heat and power plant; a water tank and a solar power system to generate hot water and thermal heat for dwellings in the Weltquartier (Global Neighbourhood) district,” the people behind this project further explain.

Interestingly enough, a cafe has also opened inside the bunker.
