According to the latest rumors around the Internet, Sprint and Microsoft might be working on the launch of a WiMAX-capable handset that would run under the Windows Mobile operating system. Nothing is confirmed at the moment, yet it seems that the wireless carrier already sent out invites for a press conference set to take place on January 6, the day before the Consumer Electronics Show kicks off.

[ADMARk=1]Since both Dan Hesse and Steve Ballmer, CEOs of Sprint and Microsoft, respectively, will be present at the event, the chances for a joint announcement are pretty good. According to Sprint, the event is a “must-attend” one, and is also the “hottest spot at CES.” No details on what the announcement might involve have emerged for the time being, but the launch of a device running under a Microsoft platform is the most likely one.

According to InformationWeek, Sprint and Microsoft might indeed announce the release of a WiMAX phone and, considering that there have been rumors on this since a few months ago, the rumor might pan out in the end. However, there are also chances that another device might be brought to the spotlight, such as a laptop or a netbook.

In related news, we learn that Sprint plans a joint announcement with LG as well, something that should involve a stylish handset. Some voices around the web suggest that we're to expect for a third Prada device to be announced, or for a second LG Lotus. Both handsets have been rumored before, and it seems that LG Lotus 2 is more likely to be announced, since none of the previously released Prada phones arrived in the US via a wireless carrier.

Since we're in the world of rumors, we should also mention some suggesting that the said WiMAX device might arrive at Sprint from LG. In case this rumor pans out, United States mobile phone users might soon be able to enjoy the first smarpthone than features 4G (WiMAX) connectivity options. CES is only a couple of weeks ahead, so stay tuned for more details on this.
