When it comes to Redmond-based software giant Microsoft and the next flavor of their mobile operating system, things seem to be crystal clear. All the latest reports on the matter pointed towards the Mobile World Congress that kicks off in Barcelona on Monday as the place where the company would announce officially the next-gen mobile client, and now an article on The Wall Street Journal comes in with the same info, namely that it will unveil the new mobile phone software at the MWC show in Spain.

It appears that the upcoming Windows Mobile 7, the next major release of Microsoft's mobile platform, is indeed ready for prime time, and that enthusiasts all around the world will finally have the chance to take a look at what the company has in store for them. As for what the OS will bring forth, a great deal of details have already emerged, including the fact that it should boast a redesigned user interface along with a new range of services to enhance the experience it can provide.

While these details emerged earlier into the wild and most of you might know them already, it seems that there are still some things that haven't been told. According to Mary-Jo Foley, Microsoft is considering the renaming of the next generation Windows Phones, and the company also stresses on the fact that there is a clear distinction between the currently available Windows Mobile OS and the Windows Phones on the market, which are the handsets powered by the platform.

The name “Windows Phone 7” popped up before, and there are chances that the software giant will name the handsets running under the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 OS this way, so as to make a clear distinction between them and devices running under previous versions of the mobile client. On the other hand, Windows Mobile 7 is said to come with a new Zune-like UI, and the re-branding might have something to do with this too, though it is only a wild guess at the moment.

However, it seems that we should expect for more to come from Microsoft during the ongoing year. According to WSJ, the company also plans on launching on the market the first Project Pink phones. The handsets are expected to arrive via Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, and they are said to be slated for a spring release. We already heard of Pink phones before, but there are still no clear details on what they will come with, though it is known that they are based on Danger’s Sidekick line of mobile phones.
