Canadian carrier WIND Mobile has recently announced that it has gained 39,000 new subscribers in Q1 2011, more than any other wireless provider in country.

WIND Mobile has touted itself as the 'fastest growing network operator in Canada', as it claimed 30% of the subscriber growth in the quarter nationally.

Although this may not seem impressive overall, if the growth is adjusted for the carrier's size of coverage areas, that means WIND's share was over 50%.

These numbers prove what we at WIND already knew - Canadians are tired of paying sky-high prices and want a real wireless alternative,” said Anthony Lacavera, chairman of Globalive Communications and WIND Mobile.

It is proof that wireless competition has been long overdue and Canadians are sending a clear signal that they have opted for WIND because of a true value for dollar offering and a positive customer service experience.”

WIND Mobile has been operating for just over a year and is now present and operates in five Canadian cities: Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

However, the carrier stated that, following its growth, it will expand the network coverage in the coming year, though no city names have been disclosed yet.

Rumors point to a possible launch of WIND's services in Peterborough Kitchener / Waterloo, St. Catherine and Niagara Falls this summer.

In addition, in later Q4 2011 and early Q1 2012 more locations will be added such as Alberta zones.

The carrier is now selling in more than 500 locations across Canada, roaming to over 200 countries.

The results are clear. The market is shifting. WIND is proving to be the competitive alternative for Canadians,” said Ken Campbell, CEO of WIND Mobile. “Our message of value and customer service is resonating with consumers and attracting them at an accelerating rate.”
