Western Digital has released a new external drive catering to the needs of Mac professionals, both aesthetically and functionally speaking.

WD’s newest generation of the popular My Book® Studio external hard drives are said to be designed for use with Mac computers and Time Machine, the OS X standard backup utility.

Indeed the new My Book Studio drive looks as if it were a torn piece from a Mac Pro tower, complete with tiny air vents and aluminum finish.

Wester Digital itself touts the new design, saying it “features a brushed aluminum casing to match the appearance of a Mac computer, and also serves to keep the drive cool while in use.”

The drive is available in 1TB, 2TB, and 3TB storage capacities.

By Default, the My Book Studio is formatted for Mac computers. However, it can also be reformatted for PC owners that use Windows or Linux.

The drive features FireWire 800/400 and USB 2.0 interfaces, user-controlled automatic backup software and drive management, password protection and hardware encryption.

The My Book Studio has WD Caviar Green series internal hard drives.

"WD has updated the design of its My Book Studio drive while providing natural cooling features delivered by the new aluminum enclosure," said Jim Welsh, executive vice president and general manager of WD's branded products and consumer electronics groups.

"The drive will maintain all the features that are important to the creative community, including high speed FireWire 800 and adding large capacities up to 3 TB," added Welsh.

Available for purchase through Western Digital store at www.wdstore.com, as well as from select retailers and distributors, the My Book Studio goes for $149.99 USD in 1TB form, $199.99 for 2TB capacity and $249.99 for 3TB.
