Western Digital has outed a new universal firmware update utility package, namely version 3.2.0.8C, targeted at some of its external hard drives.

You can view all the compatible devices, along with the related firmware versions and fixes, on the download page provided through the link below.

The package resolves an issue for drives that would not enumerate after resuming from the sleep state on USB 3.0, and adds support for the My Passport Ultra and My Passport Air external HDDs.

Before you update your drive’s firmware, make sure to do a backup of all the important files, and close all antivirus and anti-spyware software, as well as all the programs that may require drive access during the update.

An internet connection and an available USB port are also required, and bear in mind that it’s not recommended to disconnect or power off the device while the update is in progress.

As for updating an external HDD, simply extract the zip file, open “WDFirmwareUpdater.exe,” select “Continue” and accept the EULA. Now, wait for the needed files to be downloaded and the firmware version of the drive to be updated.

Afterwards, click “Exit,” remove the USB and power cables from the device, and after approximately 10 seconds, reconnect the cables and reboot the computer.
