Compatible with Mac and PCs operating system, it backs up files in RAID 1

Looks like Western Digital is catering to the needs of people who want backups of all their files, having invented the My Book Live Duo.

The company describes this item as a “personal cloud storage” that makes a copy of all files stored on the systems connected to it.

It relies on an 800 MHz CPU and has capacities of 4 TB or 6 TB.

The storage space is provided by two hard drive units set up in RAID 1 (mirrored mode).

“My Book Live Duo is really the ideal, all-in-one storage and entertainment solution for today's ultra-connected consumer,” explains Chris Bull, director of marketing for WD's Connected Home Solutions group.

“The ability for consumers to safely backup all their digital content, as well as access and share content from anywhere in the world on their tablet, smartphone or any computer, truly provides a unique and rewarding experience for anyone who wants to enjoy, and needs to protect, valuable digital content.”

My Book Live Duo is compatible with both Mac and PC operating systems.

Half its capacity is dedicated to storing user data, while the other half is, essentially, a second copy of it. That way owners can be twice as certain that they can recover their files, whatever may happen.

Windows users can use the WD SmartWare software to make the process automatic.

Owners of Apple Mac systems can do something similar with the Apple Time Machine backup software.

Moving on, this would not be much of a cloud server if things besides PCs couldn't connect to it.

Western Digital knew this well enough when it designed it, so it tossed in remote access support through www.WD2go.com and WD mobile apps for iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Android smartphones/tablets.

US retailers should already have the storage unit up for order at $399.99/312 Euro (4TB) or $499.99/391 Euro (6TB).
