When Western Digital launched its WD Red NAS hard drives, it was clear that the company was promoting network-attached storage units of all types.

Now, WD has launched two such NAS devices, although it describes them as ultra-compact backup appliances.

Called WD Arkeia DA1300 and DA2300, they use Intel Atom dual-core and Intel Xeon processors, respectively.

The former also has WD Red HDDs (total capacity of 4 TB to 8 TB), while the latter uses enterprise-class HDDs instead (8 TB to 16 TB).

Then there's Arkeia's patented Progressive Deduplication technology, which accelerates backup through data compression.

Add to that the integrated LCD display and you have all you need to save your files and know the status of the information at all times.

Windows, Linux, Mac, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Novell and BSD are just a few of the over 200 supported software platforms.

WD should start selling the Arkeia DA1300 and DA2300 as early as September, for $3,490 / €3,490 or more, depending on capacity.
