Eager to present its latest advancements in the area of high-quality and high-speed storage solutions, Western Digital has trumpeted its most recent addition to the My Book external hard drive family. Known as the My Book 3.0, the device is designed with support for the 5 Gbps data-transfer rates of the USB 3.0 interface.

"Consumers no longer have to wait for technology to keep up with their ideas. With the new super speed My Book 3.0 drives, consumers have the speed they need for resource-intensive video editing, animation, and graphic design applications," Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing for WD's branded products group, said.

As the fastest in the My Book line, the hard drive does not shy away from also excelling in storage capacity and a high reliability suggested by the two-year, limited warranty. The drive can pack up to 1TB of data of any kind and, thanks to the SuperSpeed USB 3.0, the opening and saving of the files is done 4.7 times faster than it would otherwise be achievable on a USB 2.0 connection.

The unit measures 6.5 x 5.3 x 1.9 inches and weighs 2.60 pounds. As it would be expected, and as it is still rather mandatory, the hard drive provides backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 ports. Not only that, but it is even eco-friendly, with its small retail box designed from recycled materials. The product is plug-and-play ready and will run on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The drive is already available for order on the manufacturer's official online store and comes in a bundle composed of the external hard drive My Book 3.0 itself, a USB 3.0 cable, an AC adapter, a quick install guide and the CD containing the required software. The current price is set at USD199.99 and the purchase is backed by a two-year, limited warranty.

The second part of the week is expected to yield a 2TB version of the device.
