At the beginning of July, Western Digital announced that it had entered into an agreement with Microsoft to deliver a series of network storage solution for small-to-medium sized businesses (SMBs) and today the company delivered on its promise with the introduction of the WD Sentinel DX4000.

WD's new storage server is available in two different versions, one delivering 4TB of storage space while the other reaches 8TB in capacity, but other than that both of these solutions feature similar specs.

At their heart stands Intel's D525 Atom processor with two computing cores clocked at 1.8GHz which runs the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials operating system.

Thanks to the Microsoft OS, the Sentinel DX4000 can act as both a centralized shared storage and a automatic server-based backup and restore solution for up to 25 devices (PC and Mac) connected inside a common network.

The data is stored on enterprise-class drives configured to work in RAID and the Sentinel DX4000 also comes with redundant networking ports and a redundant power option.

"The WD Sentinel small office storage server is the ideal storage, backup, and secure remote access solution for any SMB," said Thomas Gallivan, vice president of marketing for Western Digital's SMB Solutions Group.

"The ability to have centralized storage that is both on-premise and offers secure remote access provides a small business owner and employees the flexibility needed for today's mobile lifestyle.

“WD is providing small business owners with a hands-free solution that offers complete data protection and unparalleled peace-of-mind."

WD Sentinel DX4000 small office storage server is available as we speak from the company's website as well as from various other retailers.

Pricing for the 4GB version of the device has been set at $949.99 USD (702 EUR), while the 8TB model retails for $1,449.99 USD (1,071 EUR).
