In case you have been wondering about what Western Digital has been doing lately, well here's a little update. Apparently, the storage manufacturer is trying to put an end to all these talks about how SSDs are becoming the next-generation storage solution. In this sense, it has been working hard on one of its most recently released products, which is being hyped as the fastest 3.5-inch 7200 RPM drive on the market.

The new product is part of the company's Caviar lineup and is meant to bring performance to the 3.5-inch hard drives that have a platter speed of 7200 RPM. Dubbed WD Caviar Black, these drives will come in two different-capacity models, with one offering 750 GB and the other 1 TB of storage space. They will combine a 7200 RPM speed with the SATA 3 Gb/s interface and no less than 32 MB of cache, meant to deliver ultimate performance in a maximum-capacity drive.

"WD Caviar Black hard drives offer the highest capacity and performance in a desktop class drive available on the market today, enabling users to maximize the features and functionality of power computing applications such as multimedia, video and photo editing," said Don Bennett, WD vice president and general manager of desktop storage. "Selection of a WD Caviar Black drive ensures WD customers receive the best WD has to offer in terms of features, performance and reliability." he explained.

Western Digital's new Caviar lineup is categorized in such a manner that users will find it very easy to choose what product best suits their storage requirements. And, if high-performance is what the users want, this is what the WD Caviar Black series has been designed for and will consequently bring.

WD Caviar Black 750 GB (model WD7501AALS) and 1 TB (model WD1001FALS) hard drives will become available next week through select distributors and resellers. The MSRP for these drives will be set at $199 and $249 USD, for the 750 GB model and 1TB model, respectively.
