The new site promises to be a mix between Twitter and Facebook

Everyone's talking about real-time web these days, and the name that comes up the most is Twitter. The micro-blogging site has changed the way many use the Internet, and the speed at which news spreads through Twitter far outpaces any traditional news source and even online services like Google search. The trend has been spotted by many, including Facebook, and now Vyoom, a newcomer in the social media market, wants to merge Twitter and Facebook, creating the ultimate real-time experience.

Its Twitter traits can be seen in the “Social Stream,” which is populated by all the updates from your friends or other Vyoom members. The updates are delivered in real-time and they automatically get refreshed. The Social Stream is split in two, a public stream, with every update posted by every user of the service, and a private one, which only displays the status updates of their friends.

Seeing all of the updates from all of the members can get a little overwhelming, but you can use a pause button. A much better way of keeping up is by employing filters, like allowing updates from only the selected networks or friends. A Twitter-like search can also be used to filter only the updates containing certain keywords.

“We at Vyoom believe members should be rewarded for connecting and sharing with friends, family and co-workers in a real-time environment. This is why Vyoom is a place where social activity turns into points, and where points turn into products you want,” the site says.

A way the website is trying to entice new users is by means of a point system that rewards them for bringing new friends to it. They start with 70,000 points and add 5,000 for every new user they convince to join. However, if this will be enough to make a name for itself in the increasingly crowded social networking market remains to be seen.
