VueScan 8.5.41 for Mac OS X Improves Memory Usage, Enhances Performance

Hamrick Software has issued a new version of its scanning solution for Mac OS X, VueScan. Supporting over 1,200 flatbed and film scanners and 321 digital-camera raw file types, VueScan is compatible with Mac OS X, Windows and Linux operating systems. The program assists users by automatically adjusting images to an optimum color balance, which reduces the need to work in Photoshop, or other graphic-editing programs.

VueScan includes a built-in color calibration of scanners, producing colors that look true-to-life. It offers options for scanning faded slides and prints, batch scanning, IT8 color calibration and other advanced scanning features, as it supports more than 100 brands of negative films. Requirements include Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) or later, and a supported scanner. VueScan currently supports multiple different scanners on Windows.

Almost 1,000 scanners are supported on Mac OS X alone. VueScan only works with SCSI, USB and Firewire connections, most wireless Canon and HP scanners (on Windows and Mac OS X only) and doesn't work with parallel-port connections. The application works with most USB to SCSI converters on Mac OS X, including the Adaptec USBXchange and USB2Xchange.

Update 8.5.41 improves the usage of free memory, therefore increases performance, fixes a problem with per-frame options with raw files, adds Turkish language support, and improves Danish language support, according to the release notes hosted over at Ed Hamrick’s website. Interested parties can download VueScan either to try the app in trial mode, or to update to the latest version, using the link provided at the end of this article.

The software will automatically recognize if the user has already purchased their own copy of the program. All one needs to do is install it over the old version of VueScan. Upgrades are free in the first year after purchasing the Standard Edition. Upgrades are always free if the customer owns the Professional Edition. VueScan constantly adds new scanner models as they are released by their manufacturers, while support for compatible scanners is improved on a regular basis.
