Hamrick Software's scanning application for Mac OS X, VueScan, has recently been updated to version 8.4.82, adding support for a couple of new scanners, improved infrared cleaning, and improved support for WIA document feeders, to name a few enhancements. A fully-functional trial version of the software
is available for download.

VueScan can help Mac users produce scans boasting excellent color fidelity, color balance and lets them do batch scanning while producing color-balanced and cropped images at the same time, all thanks to the advanced hardware capabilities of most scanners on the market today. VueScan works with most high-quality flatbed and film scanners, and uses advanced features for restoring faded colors, batch scanning and other features used by professional photographers, supporting more than 400 scanners and 157 digital camera raw files.

"Our goal is to make VueScan the universal scanning application. We now support 1200 scanners on Windows, 750 on Mac OS X and 580 scanners on Linux," says Ed Hamrick, President of Hamrick Software. "Our next goal is to add more advanced scanning features, such as scanning multiple photos placed randomly on a scanner (auto image segmentation) and integrating Google’s Optical Character Recognition (OCR) code. All of these advanced scanning features will work with all of the 1200 supported scanners, in all 24 languages, on all three operating systems - a truly universal scanning application."

VueScan 8.4.82 adds support for two new scanners, the Canon 5600F and the Epson WorkForce 500 / 600. Infrared cleaning now performs better, while support for WIA document feeders has also been improved. Lastly, the new version of VueScan adds improved Dutch language support.

VueScan calls for Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later and a supported scanner. The scanning app supports more than 750 scanners on Mac OS X. The scanners (including the ones supported by Windows and Linux versions of the software) are organized by vendor name here.

VueScan Standard Edition costs US$59.95. The Professional Edition will have you forking for $79.95 (single-user license). Multi-user licenses are also available. The trial version of VueScan can be downloaded here.
