Vonage has launched an iPhone app that offers low-cost calls and texts. Users aren’t required to subscribe and they can save more than 70 percent on international calls than those who don’t have the app installed.

The app works over Wi-Fi, 3G and even 4G wireless data networks, and provides ultra-low-cost international calling with per-minute rates that are on average 70 percent less than major mobile carriers, when calling those who have not yet downloaded the app.

The solution is even cheaper than Skype, according to its developers.

Users can add calling credit directly from the app through iTunes in increments of $4.99 and $9.99, and they can use their existing mobile number and contact list to receive and place calls.

Using the app’s multi-invite system from their existing contacts, iPhone owners can build their own, free calling and texting network.

Calls to any phone in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico from anywhere in the world will be free for those who download and use the app right now (offer available for a limited time).

The developers clarify that “users do NOT need to be a Vonage customer to use the app. However, as an added benefit to all app users, calls to Vonage home or business lines are also free,” says Vonage.

Marc Lefar, CEO of Vonage, commented “Vonage Mobile consolidates the best features of our prior applications, while adding important functionality, better value and improved ease of use.”

“It combines the best of free high-def voice and messaging along with incredible value for traditional international calls, all while using the existing mobile number and address book for unsurpassed ease of use,” Lefar added.

Vonage Mobile is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and requires iOS 4.0 or later. iPod touch and iPad users will need headphones with mic to use the app.
