Leading wireless carrier Vodafone is reported to plan on launching a mobile application portal that would allow its subscribers, no matter the type of phone they use, to access a wide range of games, as well as news and travel applications for their devices, while also being able to purchase said software solutions.

Vodafone is yet another mobile phone industry player that intends to launch its own application store, in a move started by Apple with its iPhone App Store, which proved to be very popular in a short period of time, and was soon followed by companies like Google, RIM, Samsung, Microsoft or Nokia, which already launched or plan on launching in the near future their own software portals for mobile phone users.

According to the wireless carrier, content partners and developers would be able to reach millions of customers by only creating Web applications once. In addition, Vodafone is also reported to have announced that developers could charge for their applications directly through its billing system, while the revenues would be shared between them and the operator.

As many of you might already know, what these application portals are actually all about is providing users with the possibility to find small software solutions for their handsets so as to personalize them or to customize the way they play games, find directions and listen to music.

The fact that Apple's App Store has proved to be so successful has determined a number of other mobile phone makers, as well as wireless carriers, to consider the possibility of launching their own application portals as a means of boosting their revenues. The popularity of such app stores is expected to grow even more during this year and the next few ones, for they provide users with an easy and inexpensive way of accessing software solutions for their devices.
