In the UK and the Netherlands

Mobile phone carrier Vodafone has recently released a new software update for one of its Android-based devices, the HTC Desire, through which the owners of this device are granted access to the company's Vodafone 360 products and services. The solution was pushed out to Desire owners in the UK and the Netherlands, it seems.

However, the inclusion of Vodafone 360 services on the handset was the only major enhancement the software update for Desire came with. The operating system version on the mobile phone remained Android 2.1, just as before, even if some might have hoped for the solution to bring forth the Android 2.2 Froyo update that HTC has already started to push out to unlocked Desire devices around Europe.

“[On] 3rd August, Vodafone released a pre-planned Android 2.1 update to our Desire customers. This was originally scheduled for release a couple of weeks ago but was delayed to technical reasons,” Vodafone UK announced via a recent post on its forums. At the same time, the company notes that the Android 2.2 Froyo update might not be too far ahead, as it is currently working with HTC and Google on its release.

“Yesterday's Android 2.1 update gives customers access to Vodafone 360 products and services, which brings the experience on the Desire in line with other devices supplied by Vodafone. This means that customers have the choice to use 360 services as they wish to. It is not currently possible for the customizations to be uninstalled from the device,” the wireless carrier announced.

The wireless services provider started pushing the Vodafone 360 suite to Android-based devices earlier this year, when it began including Android applications among the software solutions available through the portal. Originally, the carrier also sold Vodafone branded devices as part of the Vodafone 360 offering, but it announced not too long ago that the handsets have been discontinued, and that it would focus only on the services available for its users.
