Major carrier Vodafone has just announced the launch of the Vodafone Smart entry-level Android phone in Europe.

Vodafone Smart will be available on the market in early summer, with Germany, Italy and UK among the first countries to receive it.

According to Vodafone, the smartphone's suggested retail price will be €90, but with certain subsidizes the phone might be even obtained for free.

Powered by Android 2.2 operating system, the Smart enables users access to the full Android experience, including the Android Market, Gmail, Google Maps and Google Talk instant messaging.

Patrick Chomet, Vodafone Group Terminals director said, “More and more Vodafone customers are enjoying the benefits of smartphones which currently account for over 40% of the phones we sell in Europe. Available on pay as you go plans, and on the fast, reliable Vodafone networks, the Vodafone Smart is a great step-up into the world of mobile data.”

In addition, the phone has a sub-par 2-megapixel camera, a rather small 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen as well as 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.

Equipped with a 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225 processor, Vodafone Smart delivers an appealing Android experience and allows users to take advantage of thousands of apps from Android Market, navigation, social-networking and multimedia.

It appears that the phone will be available in black or white color ranges, but the additional back covers can be used with various graphic designs.

Furthermore, it looks like customers will be able to personalize their phones by creating their own covers on the web.

The Vodafone Smart comes pre-loaded with direct links to key content and features including Facebook, Twitter, email, Vodafone’s ‘Prepay Manager’, Vodafone Music and the ‘Updates’ widget, which gives customers easy access to a shortlist of Android Market apps and other services selected by local Vodafone editors.
