Vivienne Westwood said she would love to dress conservative German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "If Mrs Merkel wants to wear Westwood, I can promise that I will design clothes for her that will make her look chic, refined and influential," the 65-year-old Westwood said in an interview to the magazine Stern.
Since she became the Germany's first woman leader in November, Angela Merkel has been reportedly compared to the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The avant-garde British fashion designer expressed her approval and highly respect for the good sense of dressing of the ex-prime minister: "For me Margaret Thatcher has always been one of the world's best-dressed people. Her politics were appalling, but her look gave her incredible presence."
The designer thinks she could bring good influence on Merkel's sober and casual fashion style, so as for being as chic as Margaret Thatcher. Although the Chancellor started wearing make-up and improved a little her hairstyle, she is still wearing flat shoes and trouser suits, showing an obvious lack of femininity and refinement.
The 65-year-old designer is known for the last year stir she created by selling T-shirts printed with: "I am not a terrorist, please don't arrest me", months after the London's underground attacks. She is extremely open-minded and has great faith in fashion's power of changing the world. "I would like to change the way people think. I am convinced the world could change if only a hundred of us started thinking properly. People should start reading history again and questioning society," Mrs. Westwood said.
