Microsoft continues its foray into driving a higher level of interoperability spanning beyond its own development platform, with the delivery of Codename “Eaglestone.” Softpedia users have already been able to read, since March 4th, that Visual Studio Team Explorer 2010 codename Eaglestone is now available as a Beta release through the Microsoft Download Center. Following the release of the plug-in, S. Somasegar, senior vice president of the Microsoft developer division, provided a few details on the project.

“We are announcing a broadly available beta of Microsoft Visual Studio Team Explorer 2010. This release includes the Team Foundation Server Plugin for Eclipse as well as the Team Foundation Server Cross Platform Command Line Client. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and multiple flavors of UNIX, providing access to the same source control, work item tracking, build automation, and reporting features that Visual Studio customers have benefitted from,” he stated.

Somasegar revealed that Visual Studio Team Explorer 2010 Beta was made possible through the integration of technology from Teamprise in late 2009. Teamprise solutions were designed to allow developers to access Team Foundation Server from Eclipse and non-Windows platforms.

“The Teamprise products have been very popular with TFS customers who were developing applications across Microsoft and non-Microsoft platforms. Often customers want to standardize on a single enterprise-wide solution for Application Lifecycle Management because of the cost savings and increased transparency this provides. The Teamprise technology is key in enabling cross platform TFS access,” Somasegar added.

It is essential to understand what Microsoft intends to offer developers with Visual Studio Team Explorer 2010 Beta. Codename “Eaglestone” is the Redmond company’s way of making sure that developers using Eclipse can leverage Team Foundation Server to coordinate projects by enjoying the same capabilities as Visual Studio devs do.
