Microsoft will be unveiling today, March 31, 2009, a couple of new offerings focused on its lineup of embedded platforms. Both the Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition with MSDN Embedded and the Windows Embedded Developer Update are scheduled to be announced at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) Silicon Valley 2009.

Microsoft explained that the Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition with MSDN Embedded would enable customers to not only license embedded platforms and tools at a reduced cost, but also to access technical support. At the same time Windows Embedded Developer Update is set up to allow developers to get their hands early on the latest updates offered by the software giant. “The first step in executing on the comprehensive Windows Embedded services vision is continuing our investment in developers, helping them to create smart, connected, service-oriented devices,” revealed Kevin Dallas, general manager of the Windows Embedded business unit at Microsoft.

The Redmond company informed that the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition with MSDN Embedded took MSDN subscriptions to the next level, now with a focus on developers of embedded devices. The new subscriptions permit access to products such as Windows Embedded CE, Windows Embedded Standard, Windows Embedded NavReady 2009 and Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. MSDN Embedded is planned for availability in mid-2009, namely July.

“The main objective of the Windows Embedded developer services initiative is to strengthen our commitment to ensuring that developers have seamless access to the ever-expanding set of products, documentation, support technology and third-party updates, which is why we are increasing our investment in the Windows Embedded MSDN community,” Dallas added.

The first half of 2010 is the earliest that Microsoft estimates the Windows Embedded Developer Update service will be able to go live. MSDN Embedded and MSDN Premium subscribers will be able to use the service in order to bridge Windows Embedded clients with a content repository in the Cloud, which will serve updates, platform technologies and other resources directly into the Windows Embedded development environment.
