Chances are that we’ll find out at BUILD next week

Microsoft has yet to announce the official brand for the next version of Visual Studio, but there are chances that it could be Visual Studio 11.

There’s no official confirmation from the software giant on what the successor of Visual Studio 2010 will be labeled, with the company still referring to it as Visual Studio vNext for the time being. But confirmation could come at BUILD next week, when Microsoft is expected to provide insight into Windows 8 and the developer tools accompanying the platform.

Still, Dave Mendlen, the former senior director of the Visual Studio business at Microsoft, mentioned Visual Studio 11 when talking about his new role at DevExpress.

Mendlen, a 15-year Microsoft veteran, will start serving as DevExpress Chief Marketing Officer, as of September 10, 2011.

"DevExpress is a powerful and trusted developer brand with a market-leading collection of development tools and an enormously talented group of employees fully committed to the needs of customers. I look forward to working together with the DevExpress leadership team to take it to the next level,” he stated.

On the eve of announcements related to Windows 8 and Visual Studio 11 by Microsoft, I believe there has never been a better opportunity to create new possibilities for DevExpress, its loyal customers and partners," Mendlen noted. (emphasis added)

Visual Studio 11 has a nice right to it, and I for one am not ready to dismiss it as the potential commercial brand for Visual Studio vNext.

At the same time, the moniker could be some internal reference used in Redmond and nothing more, so users are advised to take it with a grain of salt, especially since Microsoft has yet to confirm it.

One thing that has been confirmed is that the pre-release Build of Visual Studio 11, oops, my bad, Visual Studio vNext to be unveiled at BUILD and subsequently served to testers, has already been wrapped up.
