Users of Windows 7’s predecessor can run into glitches when setting up Windows Media Center, Microsoft noted. According to the Redmond company, Vista customers have reported issues in which, during the Windows Media Center Setup process, they come across a black screen which prevents the process from completing. The problem is valid for both the Home Premium and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista. [admark=1] The software giant confirmed that users running Vista Service Pack 1 and SP2 could be affected by the problem.

“You run Windows Media Center Setup on a computer that is running Windows Vista. You click the Watch Video button when you configure the display characteristics in Windows Media Center, and then minimize or maximize the window. In this situation, a black screen is displayed,” Microsoft informs.

For the time being, the Redmond company does not offer Vista users an automatic fix or an update designed to resolve the Windows Media Center Setup black screens. However, Microsoft did put together a hotfix which can be leveraged to deal with the issue. Customers that have come across black screen during the Windows Media Center setup process can access and download the hotfix free of charge from Microsoft Support. Per the information made available by Microsoft via KB978862, Windows 7 users are in no way impacted by the issue, which is limited to Vista.

“A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix,” the company stated.
