Windows Vista, in the evolution from Windows XP, delivered an overhauling of the activation infrastructure, and in this context introduced Volume Activation 2.0. Microsoft explained the necessity of such a move as an attempt to cut down the primary source of activation workarounds for pirated copies of Windows: leaked volume license product keys. Volume Activation 2.0 is available not only in Windows Vista, but also for the company's latest server operating system, Windows Server 2008. And following the release of
both Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008, Microsoft has also made available the Volume Activation Management Tool 1.1 (x86). VAMT is set up to enable the automation and central handling of the volume activation process via a Multiple Activation Key (MAK).

"Computers that can be activated with a specific MAK is based on the type and level of the organization's volume license agreement with Microsoft. VAMT version 1.1 enables the following functionality: MAK Independent Activation: Each computer individually connects and activates with Microsoft either online or via telephone. MAK Proxy Activation: Activation of multiple computers with one online connection to Microsoft. Activation Status: Ability to determine the activation status of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 computers," Microsoft revealed.

The Redmond company has revamped the way pirated copies of Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 behave when identified by the Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy mechanism. In this context, the Reduced Functionality Mode kill-switch has been scraped from both operating systems. In case that the platforms are not activated in time or in the eventuality that they are detected as non-genuine, they will offer end users what Microsoft referred to as a notifications-based experience. Namely, the desktop will be black, KMS access will be cut off, and only critical updates will be installed.

Microsoft described the additional functionality delivered by VAMT 1.1: "remaining MAK activations: The current remaining activations associated with a MAK key. XML Import/Export: Allows for exporting and importing of data in a well formed XML format to enable activation of systems in disconnected environment scenarios. Local reactivation: Enables reactivation of computers based on saved activation data stored in the VAMT XML computer information list. Configure for KMS activation: Convert MAK activated volume editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 to KMS activation."
