The official documentation provided by Microsoft, accompanying the upcoming Windows Vista Service Pack 1, points to a possible release date for the service pack via Windows Update. On January 8, 2008, concomitantly with the monthly patch cycle, the Redmond company released the KB935509 update. The item is not your average monthly Microsoft update, but one of the three prerequisites for the deployment of Vista SP1. 935509 was made available to all Vista Enterprise and Ultimate users, in order to lay out the ground for the installation of the service pack.
"In addition to KB985509, there are two other updates that will be prerequisites for Windows Vista SP1, for all versions of Windows Vista. They will be released at a later date and will improve the installation experience and reliability for the service pack as well as for individual update packages. SP1 development and testing efforts
are continuing as expected and we remain on track for its release later this quarter", explained Nick White, Windows Vista Product Manager.
The remaining two updates will be implemented into all the editions of Windows Vista. But all have one thing in common, i.e. they will be distributed automatically through Windows Update. White failed to reveal the availability deadline for updates 938371 and 937287, but it is highly probable at this point in time that the two refreshes will be a part of next month's releases scheduled for February 12. Such a scenario will make it highly unlikely for Microsoft to drop the RTM version of Vista SP1 by the end of January 2008.
"Update 938371 updates several internal components that Windows Vista requires in order to install or to uninstall Service Pack 1 more reliably. This update must be applied separately before you install Windows Vista SP1 to make sure that Windows Vista SP1 can be installed or removed from the computer. This update is necessary to install and to uninstall Windows Vista SP1 on all editions of Windows Vista. This update will be available on the Windows Update Web site soon after the release of update 935509 and before the release of Vista SP1", reads a fragment of KB 935509.
The Redmond company made it clear that all the prerequisites would come via Windows Update, as an integer part of the scheduled monthly updates. Following the release of the prerequisites, Microsoft will also drop Vista via Windows Update, Automatic Update and WSUS. But at the same time, the RTM date of Vista SP1 is bound to precede the delivery of the service pack through the company's update infrastructure, even if only by a hair. And as Windows Server 2008 is heading for RTM in February, Vista SP1 is also to be finalized in the coming month.
"Update 937287 is a prerequisite package that contains updates to the Windows Vista installation software. The installation software is the component that handles the installation and removal of software updates, language packs, optional Windows features, and service packs. This update is necessary to successfully install and uninstall Windows Vista SP1 on all editions of Windows Vista. This update will be available on the Windows Update Web site soon after the release of update 935509 and before the release of Windows Vista SP1", Microsoft added in the Knowledge Base article.
