Financial services companies MasterCard and Visa are warning banks about a data breach that affected a credit card processor from the US sometime between January 21, 2012, and February 25, 2012.

According to security journalist Brian Krebs, more than 10 million credit cards may be compromised as a result of the incident. Even worse, the leaked information may be used to counterfeit new cards.

The name of the processor was not made public, but the financial organizations which investigated the unfortunate event revealed that many of the credit cards were used in parking garages in the New York City area.

Preliminary analysis of the incident showed that a single firm that provides online financial services to credit unions alerted 482 institutions, which may have a total of 56,455 impacted accounts. Until now, out of the 56,455, only 876 accounts were targeted by fraudulent activities.

We will return with more information as soon as it’s made available.
