While working hard on the next major release of their popular cross-platform virtualization software, Oracle announced today the immediate availability for download of VirtualBox 4.3.28 for Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

According to the release notes, VirtualBox 4.3.28 is a maintenance release that brings a number of improvements over the previous stable version of the software, VirtualBox 4.3.26, which was announced back in March 2015.

Among the most important changes implemented in VirtualBox 4.3.28, we can mention support for Linux kernel 4.1 and for rdesktop 1.8.3, improved video memory utilization, compatibility with HiDPI in Windows Additions, and support for up to 5 USB drivers in Windows hosts.

The behavior of the volume control for the HD audio device emulation has been improved, the Floppy drive implementation received several fixes, and the LED state of a PS/2 keyboard is now synchronized while restoring a virtual machine.

Numerous issues have been resolved in VirtualBox 4.3.28

In addition to the changes mentioned above, several issues have been addressed in VirtualBox 4.3.28, such as a reboot issue on certain guests, a drag and drop problem that occurred when the mouse cursor was moved between the host and guest, and a path to the keymaps issue on rdesktop-vrdp.

The HID LEDs synchronization is now prevented if the virtual machine window is not focused, a crash that occurred during restore of virtual machines' state on X11 hosts was fixed, a crash that happened when shutting down a Linux guest was repaired, and listening for IPv6 now works correctly on certain systems.

Furthermore, bandwidth limit now works correctly with NAT, UDP bindings are no longer terminated on ICMP errors in NAT, more webcam models are now supported for Linux hosts, some issues on Solaris and Mac OS X hosts have been addressed, and more hardening fixes were implemented for Windows hosts.

Last but not least, there's a fix for activated Supervisor Mode Access Prevention (SMAP) on Linux kernel 3.19 and later for Intel Broadwell and newer CPUs, and flickering is now under control when the mouse cursor is updated.

Update: It was brought to our attention that this update also patches the well-known "Venom" zero-day vulnerability found in the upstream QEMU virtualization software.
