They have unusual storage capacities and advanced security features

Virtium has introduced a collection of solid-state drives intended for PoS terminals, gaming equipment, networking applications, industrial uses, in-flight entertainment, and mobile monitoring systems.

As one might be able to guess, they have different specifications from SSDs aimed at consumer applications.

Which is to say, they possess more than the usual share of security technologies, and their capacities aren't multiples of 128 GB.

Instead, they come in 80 GB, 160 GB and 300 GB, respectively. The numbers make sense, given the DecaStor SSD name.

Virtium made both 2.5-inch and 1.8-inch versions of the solid-state drives, all of which utilize 10-channel controllers and, consequently, transfer speeds of 410 MB/s when reading and 375 MB/s when writing.

On that note, the random performance is of 47,000 read and 2,500 write IOPS (input/output operations per second). Unless it's a typo and the real number is 25,000 write IOPS.

As for data defense, Virtium implemented AES encryption, security erase and vtGUARD data protection (saves data in case of power failure).

"Most of our OEM customers design their applications around specific capacity points," said Gary Drossel, vice president of product strategy at Virtium.

"Migrating to different capacities is not as easy as it is in the client space and often creates the need for software changes that must be re-qualified. Virtium saves industrial embedded OEMs from this software effort with drop-in 1.8 and 2.5-inch SSD replacements previously offered by suppliers that are now opting to pursue the data center and client markets."

Sadly, Virtium's press release did not include the pricing and availability information of the 80 GB, 160 GB and 300 GB DecaStor solid-state drives. Then again, given their intended customer base, there won't be any retail presence, so it doesn't affect us consumers much. At least the product page is already live. It can be found here.
