Utah resident Dean Hansen believes he can spot the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus, on a pine tree log.

As Hansen and his uncle chopped down a pinyon pine, to use as firewood and manufacture tent posts, he saw the spitting image of the Madonna, on the tree base.

For obvious reasons, he was shocked by the phenomenon. The Daily Telegraph makes a note of Hansen's first words as he observed the icon:

“When we first saw it, we were like ‘wow’,” he recounts.

Hansen came upon this alleged miracle in September, but he is preserving the 3-inch (7.5cm) upper slab with the image embedded in it.

Although I can understand why he is convinced he can see the Virgin on the log, as there seems to be a woman holding a baby in the picture, there are some things I cannot shake about this “apparition,” for example the fact that baby Jesus is represented as a blur, with no distinctive features.

If I didn't compare the engraving in the tree with an actual icon, I might not be able to make the connection.
