Snuffy’s triumphant return to sea isn’t as triumphant as you might think

Here’s an ad that’s bound to get Discovery Channel back into your good graces, assuming that whole mermaids are real “documentary” and ensuing controversy got you swearing you will never watch anything they make,  ever again.

It’s a clip for Shark Week and it’s so well made that many actually believed they were seeing an actual report of Snuffy the Seal’s terrible and totally unexpected death by shark.

That’s why the video went viral so quickly.

You can relax now: Snuffy, as cute as he or she might be, was computer generated. The story that Snuffy was saved, nursed back to good health and then returned to sea (at least in theory) is, no doubt, the brainchild of a savvy advertising type.

The shark is also CGI, but both are done in such a convincing fashion that it’s hard not to wince when you look at the clip.
