When Ryan Gosling’s second collaboration with director Nicolas Winding Refn was announced, “Only God Forgives,” movie buffs and critics alike rejoiced: after seeing “Drive,” what could possibly go wrong, especially when the synopsis promised an even more violent plot?

As it turns out, many things could – and did – go wrong. The film was met only with lukewarm reviews from the critics community, while fans positively hated it for being ultra-violent to the point where it was devoid of all meaning.

Personally, I loved it. Indeed, the film is extremely flawed and so intent on creating visual tableaux that it sacrifices the narrative altogether in many places, but at least it has guts. Both literal and virtual.

So this is why I’d like to share today’s Viral of the Day with the handful of other people who also appreciated Refn’s gutsy moviemaking in “Only God Forgives.” You might not be able to see it when watching the movie, but a lot of work went into creating the visual effects for it, from the severing of a hand, to the long dolly shots and the creation of said cinematic tableaux.

The VFX showreel embedded below is just as violent as the movie, so *please note that discretion is heavily recommended while viewing it.

Martin Madsen was VFX Supervisor on this, and his work is to be commended.
