James Cameron is not what you’d call a subtle filmmaker, and there really aren’t that many ways in which you could interpret the love story depicted in his blockbuster “Titanic,” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as leads.

Leave it to the fans to come up with a new twist on a film that’s been making movie lovers weep for Jack’s fate since 1997: there’s a new theory making the rounds on tumblr, explaining his very presence on the ship in a very unexpected way.

Apparently, Jack was a time traveler and he went back a few years to save Rose from death by suicide. You know, when she tried to jump off and he talked her out of it.

Unfortunately, this triggered another series of events that saw him and many of the passengers on the ship die after the collision with the iceberg.

Clues to support this apparently insane theory are his haircut and rucksack, which won’t be in fashion for another while from the year the action takes place, the fact that he mentions a man-made lake that hadn’t even been made yet, and his invitation to take Rose on the rollercoaster on the Santa Monica Pier, which, again, hadn’t been built yet.

“How else would Jack have knowledge of these future places?” the author of this theory asks. How indeed?
