Walt Williams, the writer of Spec Ops: The Line, believes that violent video games lack creativity and that developers should try to introduce more interesting themes in the near future.

During the Game Developers Conference, the developer, quoted by Gamespot, told the audience that, “I would like to see less violent games out there. Not because they’re bad or wrong, but because I think creatively they’re too easy.”

The writer also reflected on the success of Spec Ops: The Line, saying, “Honestly, the game was very much an experiment. One that, to this point, I’m kind of really surprised that it ever made it to the shelves.”

The Yager-developed game has created a complex narrative that featured violence in order to make players question their own agency and motivations.

It has gained praise from critics, but has failed to be commercially successful.
