Daisuke Suzuki from the Vine Linux team announced today the immediate availability of Vine Linux 5.0, a free Japanese community Linux-based operating system for both workstations and server machines. The new version of Vine Linux brings support for the x86_64 (AMD64 or Intel64) architecture and bleeding-edge packages, such as Mozilla Firefox 3.5.2, X Server 1.6.3 or Apache 2.2.13.

"Since this is not a commercial version (Vine Linux CR), non-free applications and fonts are not included on the CD/DVD. Instead of proprietary ATOX X/Wnn7/Wnn8/VJE Japanese inputs and Ricoh/Dynacomware fonts, this ftp version contains Anthy and free TrueType fonts. Vine Linux 5, unlike the commercial version (Vine Linux CR), does not come with any 'supports' - if you face any troubles and problems with Vine Linux, or if you have any questions, a mailing list for Vine Linux users (vine-users ML) would be appropriate. In case you need a 'support' for the Vine Linux, you may buy a commercial support service individually." - was said in the official release notes.

Highlights of Vine Linux 5:

· Linux kernel 2.6.27.29;
· X.Org 7.4;
· X Server 1.6.3;
· GNOME 2.26.3;
· Mozilla Firefox 3.5.2;
· Faster and lightweight;
· Reorganized software collection;
· Support for x86_64 (64-bit) platforms;
· Greatly improved look and feel;
· Added user-friendly utilities;
· Added DVD/USB installable images.

Minimum System Requirements for Vine Linux 5:

For 32-bit edition:

· Pentium 1GHz or higher processor;
· 256MB (Recommend 512MB) system memory;
· 700MB free disk space for minimum install;

Vine Linux 5 is extremely good distribution. First install screen is in Japanese, just click on the green arrow, and after that, it is english. Installs very fast, you can choose very easily what packages you want installed, after that, it all gets better. It onle has about 4000 packages in the main repo, but it also has a rpminstaller that lets you install any rpm package at a click of a mouse. If you are looking for stable fast and up to date distribution that is rpm based, I haven't found another one yet! :)
