Twitter’s Vine is upping the ante in its battle against Instagram Video, adding channels, new on-the-rise submissions, re-vining, new capture tools, and protected accounts.

In case you haven’t heard of Vine, it’s probably high time that you did.

Although Instagram Video is much more likely to have gained your attention, Vine was first to the party to deliver a comprehensive social network featuring looping videos and cool sharing tools, which means it deserves a chance to make it to the top.

And if Twitter’s latest Vine update is any indication, it most likely will.

Vine version 1.3 is now available on the iTunes App Store with a flurry of new features and enhancements that make the service more attractive than ever.

First off, there’s a new Channels section which, without fail, includes a Cats section, followed by Comedy, Art, Experimental, and more.

On-the-rise posts are now more visible in the Explore screen, and re-vining is now possible. As you might have already guessed, re-vining is the equivalent of retweeting.

New capture tools are included, including focus, grid, and ghost tools, and accounts are now more secure thanks to the ability to allow only people you approve to follow you and view your posts.

Also included in this update are some tweaks and fixes that aim to make your Vine experience smoother than ever. According to Twitter Inc., those include:

• Fixed an issue that caused the camera to focus unnecessarily while recording • Improved cache control and less disk space usage • Faster search for hashtags and people you mention frequently • Crash fixes and other miscellaneous improvements

Twitter ends the Vine 1.3 announcement with a big thank you, and an encouragement to reach out to [email protected] or @vineapp with any issues or suggestions.

The company also promises to roll out even more exciting features this summer, so stay tuned.
