Though memory slots haven't been used for much, if anything, besides housing DRAM modules so far, Viking Modular Solutions has just finished introducing a new NAND Flash device, a Solid State Drive of sorts which, as odd as it may sound, is meant to use those same slots and provide servers with unprecedented storage capacity and performance.

Basically, the so-called SATADIMM solid state drive (SSD) employs the DDR3 240-pin memory module form factor.

This SATADIMM not only has TRIM support and sustained read and write speeds of 260 MB/s, but also built-in AES-128 encryption.

What's more, it comes with a super capacitor for data protection in case of power failure, as well as a random write performance of 30,000 IOPS.

Coupled with the intelligent write management techniques, these specifications only enhance the value given to these drives by their capacities of 25GB to 200GB (SLC) or 50GB to 400GB (MLC/eMLC).

"Viking Modular is the first to deliver a ground breaking, flexible and efficient method of enabling SSD integration into standard server & storage appliances," said Adrian Proctor, Vice President of Marketing at Viking Modular.

"It can breathe new life into maxed out systems with the high performance and low power consumption of SSD technology,” he added.

“Furthermore, it opens up the possibility for new design, no longer constrained by standard hard drive space requirements," Proctor said.

Viking Modular Solutions hopes to see its newest invention make its way into any servers with spare 240-pin DDR3 DIMM sockets. The 50GB, 100GB and 200GB SATADIMMs are already sampling, but pricing and actual availability details are still unknown.

“This technology allows users to significantly increase the capacity and storage performance of their existing server, storage or cloud computing solutions. It also allows systems designers new options and greater flexibility when creating new server design,” states the official announcement.
