It would appear that not all media tablets are as popular as the Advent Vega, or at least the one from Viewsonic, dubbed GTablet, has had some issues, or so early adopters reported, issues that the company claims should be fixable with a small update.

By now, end-users will no doubt have learned that media tablets have finally begun to sell for real, even some apparently popular ones like the Advent Vega.

Still, while that one won users over with its low price and use of Tegra 2, to the point where it was sold out in hours (twice), not all products can claim the same success.

Viewsonic is one company that seems to have hit a snag when it comes to the GTablet, even though it uses the more or less similar Tegra 2- Android hardware-software combination.

Early adopters of the product complained about what is now simply referred to as a 'poor user experience,' and, consequently, did a significant number of returns.

Viewsonic later said that the preloaded Tap and Tap Android layer was one of the problems behind the slow performance.

The company said that whatever issues existed were because of Android's lack of optimization for large-screen devices (10.1 inches), an unoptimized Adobe Flash plugin and a custom UI that doesn't work well with Tegra 2 for some reason.

Fortunately, the outfit said that a mere software update should be able to remedy all of the problems and will be ready for download by the end of January, 2011.

“We always listen to customers; while they love the hardware, they raised several issues about the user interface,” Jeff Volpe, VP and GM for ViewSonic Americas.

“As a result, our software partner is releasing an upgrade that will address customer concerns,” he added.

“Along with great performance improvements, customers will have the flexibility to use both a standard Android interface as well as a user-customizable interface which has been significantly enhanced since the product launch.” Volpe continued.

“ViewSonic is committed to its tablet endeavors and will continue with new announcements at CES in January.”
