The company continues to experiment with unusual screen sizes

Normally, makers of display panels have standard screen sizes they produce their displays in, but ViewSonic doesn't like to be fettered by habit, so it has been playing with less ordinary types. The new VG39 series is indicative of that.

The company has released a member of the VG2039m-LED series that measures 19.5 inches in diagonal (20 inches with the bezel).

It will make a fine addition to the line that already includes 22-inch and 24-inch displays.

The new monitor isn't super-impressive otherwise. Sure, the DCR (dynamic contrast ratio) is of 20,000,000:1, but many monitors have mega CR nowadays.

More importantly, the resolution of the display is a not-so-stellar 1600 x 900 pixels.

Sure, Full HD 1920 x 1080 isn't really required for enterprise/business users, but it's not like 1080p is hard to build nowadays.

Besides, that 10% extra viewing area compared to conventional 18.5-inch panels could have resulted in more than a 37% increase in the number of pixels.

Nevertheless, ViewSonic chose to give its new LCD a 19.5-inch panel with 1600 x 900 resolution, so that's what came out.

"Many of our commercial customers need certain sizes and resolutions, whether it be due to space limitations, application needs, or in some cases cost," said Kenneth Mau, product manager for ViewSonic.

"We designed the VG2039m-LED especially for our enterprise customers who value premium features such as a thin, matte finish bezel, advanced ergonomics and DisplayPort connectivity, while requiring a smaller form factor."

To link to PCs, ViewSonic's VG2039m-LED boasts DisplayPort, DVI-D and VGA connectors. Other relevant features include Energy Star and EPEAT Silver certifications and a VESA-mountable design. People from government and education fields can get it for $179 / €179. All in all, if you're willing to live with the resolution, it should be a good long-term investment.
