Equip more features and areas with the new dark theme

Each desktop differs from one individual to the other. Whether all desktop icons are hidden, the taskbar on the upper part of the screen, or colors just don’t seem to fit anything, it’s all because of visual customization made available by Windows.

However, the fellas over at Microsoft most likely have something new in mind, with various preview builds either enabling or disabling certain visual tweaks. There’s a little degree of uncertainty about what exactly new visual tweaks mean in Windows 10, but one of them is most likely amongst additions, the dark theme.

The latest build is actually stuck in it and only changeable through registry tweaks. Sadly, it’s not yet fully implemented and doesn’t cover all areas, apps, and windows. For instance, we found out that pressing Ctrl + T in Store changes it to a really dark theme, but it only works for the store.

To get a better idea of what more Windows 10 locations look like with the dark theme, there’s a tweak in the registries you need to manually perform. Here’s what you need to do.

Dark settings panel

Step 1: Press Win + R to launch the Run utility.

Step 2: Write down regedit and hit Enter to bring up the Registry Editor.

Step 3: Navigate to this location KEY_LOCAL_USER -> SOFTWARE -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Themes -> Personalize.

Step 4: Right-click Personalize and from the New menu, choose to create DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Step 5: Name it SystemUsesLightTheme and double-click it to edit its value.

Step 6: In the Data Value field, write down 0 (zero).

Step 7: Close the Registry Editor and run Settings to see changes.

Note: The Ctrl + T hotkey doesn’t work for the Settings menu like it does for the Store. To change it back, simply replace the 0 value with 1 in the registry editor.
