With most storage product manufacturers releasing, or planning to release, new solid state drives with higher capacities and better performance, Western Digital, one of the world's leading providers of internal and external storage solutions, has decided to provide its customers with a new way by which they can enjoy the digital content they have stored on various storage solutions, including the company's own WD My Passport portable drive.

Consequently, the company has just introduced the new WD TV MediaPlayer, a device that is meant to connect to the user's TV or home theater and play digital movies, music and photos from different USB mass storage devices.

"As leaders in external storage, we have become the trusted brand for storing and backing up large media collections for consumers around the world," said Jim Welsh, senior vice president and general manager for WD's Branded Products and Consumer Electronics Groups. "Our best-selling My Passport portable drives help customers carry their media library with them anywhere but until now, there has been no easy, affordable way to access and play all that content in their living rooms. The WD TV HD Media Player effectively unlocks all that content from the storage device and lets people enjoy it on their biggest screen and best sound system."

The company's new media solution comes with built-in features, such as a remote control to allow users easy access to the content and easy navigation through the product's functions, two USB 2.0 connectors, full HD video playback, up to 1080p for a high-quality media experience, and an HDMI port to connect the WD TV MediaPlayer to the HDTVs or home theater systems. In addition, users will also be able to benefit from the media player's built-in software, which enables easy access through the media library.

The new WD TV HD Media Player is now available at the company's online store and select retailers, for a manufacturer's suggested retail price of just $129.99 USD.
