VideoLAN’s VLC media player is one of the most popular desktop applications out there, mainly due to its support for rendering most of the multimedia files available now, and it seems that it might not be too long before it arrives on Windows Phone devices as well.

In fact, the team behind the software has already confirmed on Twitter that it is considering the release of such an application, but that it does not have specifics on its release as of now.

When asked whether a Windows Phone client would arrive, the team said that they would most likely launch it for Windows Phone 8.1 devices, citing performance reasons.

However, they did not provide further details on the mobile client, but did say that its availability depends on what Microsoft announces at the BUILD conference in early April.

For those out of the loop, we should note that Microsoft has already confirmed an update for Windows Phone 8 for the spring, but that it did not fully unveil it as of now.

The OS refresh, supposedly set to arrive as Windows Phone 8.1, might be officially introduced at the company’s BUILD conference next month, while expected to arrive on devices either in late April or in early May.

At the moment, VideoLAN is working on the release of a Windows 8/8.1 version of the VLC player, and the tight relation between the platform and the mobile counterpart should allow for a fast release on Windows Phone too.
