President’s request at having the remark off the record not granted

Not even the President of the United States agrees with interrupting Kanye West and what he did to Taylor Swift at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, as the world already knows. First, there was a Tweet saying Obama had called Kanye a moron (in a less delicate term), then an audio clip – now, thanks to YouTube and overzealous reporters, we have video.

“I thought that was really inappropriate. It was like, she was getting an award, why are you butting in? I hear you.” Obama can be seen saying in the video, which he clearly believed was just a private discussion that would not go on record. “I agree with you. The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person, she’s getting her award, what is he doing up there? He’s a jack[expletive].” the President adds.

Only seconds later, as the entire room bursts into laughter, Obama realizes what he has just said and goes, “Come on, guys, cut the president some slack. I’ve got a lot of other stuff on my plate.” At the same time, Obama can be seen gesturing and asking whether the conversation is off the record. He was told it was – it turned out the media did not want to keep such a juicy remark from the public, as we also reported.

Not that this matters in any way, save to show that nothing is off the record anymore, not even when it comes to someone specifically demanding that it be so. Kanye West and his rude VMAs interruption has now become a worldwide phenomenon, thanks to the Internet and many people who saw in the “Imma let you finish” speech something similar to a gold mine. Websites have been set up, videos have been made and photos altered, all of them to include Interrupting Kanye and his now infamous speech in all the major historical events “of all time,” as the rapper himself would say.

The Urban Dictionary, for one, always mirroring the changes that take place in spoken English each day, has included a new definition under “Imma let you finish.” The terms mean, as per the dictionary entry, “Obnoxious way to interrupt someone and steal their moment, while wryly mocking that media train wreck that is Kanye West. Based on West’s instantly infamous interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video with his insane microphone-stealing shout out to Beyonce.”
