It was only a matter of time before owners of the brand new PlayStation Vita used the device to run older games made for different platforms through the use of some kind of emulator. Now, as you can see in the video above, the new console is running the much older Sonic & Knuckles game that originally appeared on the Sega Genesis.

The PlayStation Vita is Sony’s best handheld gaming console, at least according to the company itself, designed for the next generation of mobile games, but is also backwards compatible with titles and applications for the PlayStation Portable, its predecessor.

Using this backwards compatibility, an owner of the Vita, via Kotaku, has made the console run a special emulator for the old Sega Genesis platform and, to prove it works, has made a video of the new console playing the classic Sonic & Knuckles game.

According to the uploader of the video, however, Sony has put in place a few security measures that can easily eliminate this exploit and prevent users from running emulators for other devices on the Vita, so don’t expect this trend to take off without Sony’s leave.
