Comedy star Victoria Wood, 52, came first in the Top 10 funniest women in the UK, a poll of more than 4,000 people, which was carried out for Reader's Digest magazine. Britain's funniest woman, famous for her her one-woman shows and for TV comedies Dinnerladies and Acorn Antiques, won ITV's New Faces talent show in 1973. Victoria Wood has recently helped to adapt Acorn Antiques for the stage, for which Julie Walters, who came fifth in the top, reprised her popular role as the haggard tea-lady Mrs Overall, according to BBC Vicar of Dibley star Dawn French won the second place, former psychiatric nurse Jo Brand came third, while Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders came fourth, and actress Julie Walters close the top five.
