When Victoria Beckham announced that she would be going into the fashion industry, not merely as a fashionista who kept up to speed with every new designer item but as a designer on her own, not many were those who took her seriously. She couldn’t possibly cut it, they said. Unveiling her fourth collection over the weekend, for Fall 2010, a more relaxed but still very stylish and layered line, Victoria Beckham managed to win the hearts of all 20 fashion editors present at the launch, as The National writes.

She could have easily made the presentation about showing the world that she was as far from a regular woman as it gets, critics say. Instead, Victoria Beckham kept it very intimate and friendly, inviting only about 20 editors to the launch and speaking herself of each model that was being unveiled. She also made it a point of presenting herself before the actual show and shaking the hand of everyone there, which is a lot even for a designer who is just now making a name for herself.

On with the collection, this truly turned out to be a very pleasant surprise, the same publication says. Sure, the designs continue to stick to the same severe cut and unforgiving shape but, then again, this is what made Mrs. Beckham famous in the first place. New things have also been included, like evening gowns in designs that are more feminine and flowing, layered creations for daytime and new fabrics, that last part with the purpose of playing upon contrasts between, say, a more rigid skirt and an extremely feminine and flowing top.

“Beckham opened with a series of wool crepe and jersey dresses, which were not only bold due to their Dick Tracy red color, but also because of the addition of restrained volume to her signature taut silhouette. This season, she explored the tension between the structure and movement of fabric on the body, resulting in gorgeous wool pencil skirts paired with a drapey lamé top, body-hugging dresses with soft folded panels, a charcoal sweater dress cut on the bias and a gorgeous sapphire floor-length gown that moved mellifluously. She’s also added some new materials and techniques to her design repertoire, such as metallic raffia, double-sided jacquard, raw-edge details and hand tacking to create a cloudlike effect on a gazar dress. To anchor the dresses, Beckham collaborated with Brian Atwood for her towering, impossible-to-walk-in heels,” The National writes of the new collection.

Like with her previous outings (this is her fourth, as also noted above), Victoria Beckham managed to subtly raise the bar for herself some more, the publication goes on to say. While her designs are still almost perfect reflections of her everyday style, they’re also now more mature, more sophisticated and more creative.
