Much has been said about Victoria Beckham and her slender body, including some of the harshest allegations a female star can possibly deal with, namely that she’s starving herself to be this thin. In the latest issue of fashion bible Harper’s Bazaar, the former Spice Girl turned respectable designer, reveals the secret behind her toned figure.

Mrs. Beckham works out a lot: every single day of the week, to be more precise. She’s not deliberately trying to be excessively thin, she tells Harper’s, but she does want to look as good as possible. She even has a perfect reason for this near-obsession to work out, namely that she doesn’t want to rely on airbrushing to look good in photos. By taking care of her body, she’s literally making sure she gives good shots no matter whether they’re paparazzi snaps or photospreads.

“I didn’t want to rely on retouching. I wanted to look at those pictures in 20 years’ time and say, ‘Wow, look – after three kids – I didn’t look bad’.” Victoria says in the special issue of Harper’s Bazaar, which features a lengthy interview with her and a stunning photospread as well. In all fairness, judging by the photos in the magazine alone, it certainly seems all that hard work has already paid off.

Dressed in both creations from high-fashion designers like Yves Saint Laurent and her own things, Victoria strikes her best broken doll / pouting poses, while also showcasing her slender and toned body. Speaking of her own creations, the star admits in the same interview that making the decision to start a career as a fashion designer was one of the hardest she ever had to make: not because she felt she didn’t have what it took to make it, but because she feared the public’s reaction to her designs.

“I felt beyond vulnerable. I’d never known nerves like it in my life. The night before, I got nodules in my throat. I’d never felt such anxiety. I was very aware that people were expecting very short clothes, probably quite revealing, and I really went against that and showed the other side of me. I just want to learn as much as I can. I was always pushed into the theatre and dance – it’s just taken me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do.” Victoria says of her career in fashion, for which she’s already reaping the most heart-warming praises from the likes of Roberto Cavalli and Manolo Blahnik.

The special double-cover December issue of Harper’s Bazaar is out on stands on November 5.
