14 DAY TRIAL // Viber Media has announced a new update for its iOS client and, most importantly, a couple of clients for desktop platforms. The Mac Viber app will compete directly with Apple’s own FaceTime.
Viber 3.0 has been released this week with support for the all-new Viber Desktop for Mac and Windows. The desktop apps require that you have Viber installed on a mobile platform before you can activate it.
The service can now transfer live calls between Viber on your iPhone and Viber on Desktop, and you can now send video messages to your friends.
A new voice engine is leveraged to improve sound quality on both low-quality and high-quality networks, and an online status indicator tells you when your friends are connected.
Just like with other chat clients, you can send and receive messages even on invisible mode.
A new in-app banner indicates that you have new messages, and you can automatically download new photos for faster viewing.
Captions can be added to the photos and videos you send, and you can now browse through photos received from specific users.
Groups can be displayed in the messages screen (leaving out individual users).
Other changes include: larger photos and larger photo thumbnails; a visually-enhanced contact info screen; a new package of stickers; accessibility support.
Viber now fully supports the following languages: Czech, Danish, Greek, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Swedish, Turkish, Korean, Dutch, Thai, Vietnamese, Malay and Indonesian (in addition to previous languages: Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazil), and German).
The new Viber 3.0 for iOS also includes some performance improvements and bug fixes, as well as numerous tweaks that were too minor to mention in the release notes.
