Via, one of the biggest motherboard producers, notified its CPU (Central Processing Unit) customers that beginning May 2006 it will sell only CPUs with a self designed front side bus (FSB). The front side bus is a vital part of the data transferred from the CPU to other components of the computer. The company announced that it will not extend its deal with Intel in using its compatible front side bus.
Via
began a transition process in May 2005, and launched its latest CPU series, named C7. The company also launched its own front side bus design, running at a 800 MHz clock speed, called V4-Bus. This move was made in order to replace
Intel's older front side bus that was running at only 133 MHZ. To make it short, the faster the front side bus is, the faster the computer applications are.
Via officials stated that they needed to change the front side bus architecture because they wanted more performance. However, Via's front side bus replacement was a must also because the company had an agreement with
Intel to use compatible FSBs on its CPUs only by the end of March 2006.
